November Contest: The Tower of Askobar

Black magic, rare are those who have knowledge of where it originally came from, or how to use it. The rumors were that, somewhere in the middle of the desert of Askobar was a tower, a black marble tower so tall in the sky it was hard to see the top. In this tower, answers about the ancestors of this dark magic were carved on the walls. Many have tried to enter the tower of Askobar to steal the secrets of this dark magic but the only appearing opening on the tower was approximately a mile high from the ground, where no stairs could be found. Some say that eating a crystal pear form the fruit tree at the bottom of the tower would transport you inside. The problem is, no one ever made it back out.

CGC Matte Painting guidelines | The Tower of Askobar

1) Your image composition is an Establishing shot showing the pear tree and a good portion of the tower.
2) The desert of Askobar is made of white sand and black volcanic rock.
3) Time of day: Overcast
4) The pears look like they that are made of sand blasted glass.
5) The final resolution output of your piece should be matching the aspect ratio of a eight perf* film stock.
6) The pear tree is a dead looking tree.
7) The piece should incorporate at least one photograph.
8) The piece should incorporate at least one 3D element. (The 3D element doesn't have to be a final element. It can be used as general blocking tool i.e. cubes to guide you with perspective or general layout. Note that you are more than welcome to create final 3D assets to incorporate in your piece)
9) And don't forget, you should learn and have fun doing it!

I looked at the A.S.C. manual and measured the ratio but I don't know if I'm right or wrong, is this the correct ratio?

Hi,

I've started a thread here, http://forums.cgchannel.com/showthread.php?t=331, for comments and suggestions. I put the sky and ground together this morning.

Is there a preferred lens type we should match to? Thanks!

I do realize we aren't matching to a backplate, but if we're doing any sort of camera move for our final, I wanted to be sure what I do fits within the guidelines.
