Default February Contest: Bloody Valentine

February Contest: Bloody Valentine

A few years from now…

With the theme of love in the air, I challenge you to digitally kill something. Whether it is a bloody massacre or something subtle like removing a body part. Basically the challenge is to dynamically create digital blood.

1) I would take video with a locked off plate of a couple acting like they are being gunned down. Also I would shoot a clean plate with no one in the shot. In Maya I would quickly model a stylized cupid, which I would do basic animation of him shot hundreds of heart arrows at the couple. Next I would create emitters in which would deliver the bloody result. Then finally it is taking all the elements into a composting package and giving everything a happy love glow, just for fun.
2) The aspect ratio should be 1.77 (HD)
3) The final resolution output of your piece should be: 1280 x 720
4) The YouTube plug-in is installed on the forum and supports either standard def or HD. To Embed a YouTube video you only put the video ID in between the BB code tags (NOT the full URL!). In your YouTube channel, Embedding MUST be enabled for the video!

For more info read the CGC Contest Rules / FAQ: Visual Effects

The contest ends on March 5th and three winners will be picked. You have till then to complete your matte shot. The winners will be picked based on how they did in regards of the guidelines described above.

Every month, for each contest, three winners will be picked.

The first position winner will get: 10 Gnomon DVDs
The second position winner will get: 5 Gnomon DVDs
The Third position winner will get: 2 Gnomon DVDs

The winners are picked on the 5th of each month and the results will be announced in the thread of that particular contest.

When winning a contest, the Gnomon Workshop will contact you so you can pick your DVDs and confirm your shipping address. You will have the choice of getting hard copies or digital downloads. Usually you can expect to receive the email form the Gnomon Workshop about a week after the winners have been announced.

Good luck!!

Default good progress

I think these are hilarious. I can't wait to see more.

I think that the piranha one should make more of a connection with the painting. Have it come out of the water or somehow integrate it into the painting.

The AE clone explosion is great i love the sound effects but i wish i had more of a cleaner understanding of the cause of the explosion. I felt it was because of the soda but not sure. Maybe just adding a sound before the first one like jake in the box.

Great job though and good luck.

I actually think I'm going to attempt this months. Hopefully nothing falls on my plate to disrupt it. Cheers!

Default Skin burst

Ok, unfortunately this is as far as I can go, wish I could work on it more. I've got some other obligations to tend to. I've been waiting to find time to join in on the fun here, but work's been a tad nuts. The modeling done in Cinema 4D using clothilde for the skin element. Tracking done in After Effects with post work in AE and Photoshop. Blood spatter using Realflow, some particle sim using After Effects, and some blood textures made in Photoshop. Cheers!

Here's my goofy entry. Hope you enjoy it! Very brief behind-the-scenes info posted below the vid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV_WXseFe-I

Physical head removal accomplished via the Braveheart Mace-in-the-Face trick. All blood, chunks, and eye bulges done in After Effects. Bleeding eyes via a combination of CC Mr. Mercury, Tint, Roughen Edges, and Puppet Tool (apply Puppet tool on last frame of blood animation so that all pixels are affected). Bulging eyes owe much to Andrew Kramer's Demon Face Warp tutorial. Lens splotches are CC Mr. Mercury, Freeze Frame, Tint, Roughen Edges, and Fast Blur. Head chunks were done via Shatter, Roughen Edges, Tint, and CC Force Motion Blur. Neck stump (only visible on 2 frames) is a solid with a Ramp and Roughen Edges.

All blood was created entirely in After Effects by me - no stock footage or libraries were used.
