Default Mar 2010 | Not a Scratch Matte Painting Contest

February Contest: Not a scratch…

Starting date: March 1st
Deadline date: April 5th

Long Beach, California. 12:05 AM

Saturday night. It’s few minutes after twelve. The air is cold and the ground still wet. Probably the worst time to do this deal but it’s our only option. The shipment leaves in the morning for the Vegas AutoShow so we have to act now. What is this place? We’re at the Long Beach port loading docks. You see these two containers right there? One of them has a Porsche 918 in it, the other an FXX. A semi is picking us up in 15min. Should be enough time for us to pick the lock of the containers, jump start the cars and pull them out. We do one each. Once the semi is here, we load them up and we’re out of here … and yeah, easy on the throttle, they growl pretty loud. Easy money.

CGC Matte Painting guidelines | Not a scratch

The matte painting is an establishing shot of a port at night after a rainy day. Your matte painting must show a lot of containers lined up on the right end side of the shot. Two of these containers have to be open showing the two exotic cars pulling out or pulled out already. The shot needs to show the semi truck.

1) The piece will have to be the extension or enhancement of an existing photograph. (the plate). You can download the plate from Flickr using the following link. :

http://www.flickr.com/photos/3034378...39856/sizes/o/

This plate needs some surgery. Let’s see your ability at restoring a damaged plate.

2) The aspect ratio of your final image should be: 65mm full frame
3) The final resolution output of your piece should be: 1920 x ####
4) The piece should incorporate at least one photograph, the plate*.
5) The piece should incorporate at least one 3D element.

*note: The 3D element doesn't have to be a final element. It can be used as general blocking tool i.e. cubes to guide you with perspective or general layout. Note that you are more than welcome to create final 3D assets to incorporate in your piece.

The contest ends on April 5th and three winners will be picked. You have till then to complete your matte shot. Showing your wip is required in order to qualify. The winners will be picked based on how they did in regards of the guidelines described above.

Every month, for each contest, three winners are picked.

The first position winner will get: 10 Gnomon DVDs
The second position winner will get: 5 Gnomon DVDs
The Third position winner will get: 2 Gnomon DVDs

The winners are picked on the 5th of each month and the results will be announced in the thread of that particular contest.

When winning a contest, the Gnomon Workshop will contact you so you can pick your DVDs and confirm your shipping address. You will have the choice of getting hard copies or digital downloads. Usually you can expect to receive the email form the Gnomon Workshop about a week after the winners have been announced.

Remember, this should be really fun. Take your time while choosing your photo references. If you can't find exactly what you need, building the geometry will allow you to light it the way you want.

Have fun!

Yeah hopefully the camera lens is not to different from the plate in terms of focal length. The horizon line level is also tricky sometimes. Distorting photographic elements, cars especially always shows. I wonder if there are 3D models of an FXX online available for download to use for layout purposes..

it probably is too wonky to work in the shot, i'll have to go dig up the photos from my flickr page...
not getting my hopes up and i'll be keeping the fingers crossed about finding models. if not i can model what i need (be it full-blown model or some basic shapes that are close enough to paint over) OR i can draw up some serious perspective guides to prevent a brain cramp when i draw them in by hand!

there's a pretty good port here in tampa. not as big as long beach but i'm sure i can still get a ton of useful photos or at least some good reference.
i like having more than a week!

Default What a crappy plate!

Don't know if I can participate this month but I'll try. Looks very challenging.

Yeah cool work JB!

As for the cars, taking pictures of a model kit outside at night time, lit the way you want, could also help a great deal!

Hello everyone!
I'm going to enter in the contest. But I am not sure I really understood the guidelines. Do I have to put my WIP and my final compositing in this thread, or do I have to create another thread?
Thanks for your answer, and good luck to everyone!
