![]() December Contest: A.I. Artificial Intelligence | Rouge City Starting date: December1st Deadline date: February 5th “Within where neon weathered pleasure domes, glittery crystalline malls selling tax-free goods, blissful boulevards, casinos, cabarets, body shops…” Toll Gates to Rouge City After escaping the flesh fair, Gigolo Joe guides David to Rouge City where he will find the omniscient Dr. Know. They hitch a ride from a group of boys who, needing little persuasion after the promise of the delights that await them, head towards the bright lights of the city. In Spielberg/Kubrick’s Artificial Intelligence, the destination of Rouge City conveyed a warm street scene, filled with lights and prevailing eroticism. This month’s challenge is to convert the plate into a street scene where the buildings are reflecting an art deco style and a fantastic playground that could be the equivalent of a futuristic Vegas. CGC Matte Painting guidelines | A.I. Artificial Intelligence 1) Convert the plate into a street scene of Rouge city. 2) The aspect ratio of your final image should be: HD 3) The final resolution output of your piece should be: 1920 x #### 4) The piece should incorporate at least one photograph, the plate*. 5) The piece should incorporate at least one 3D element. A plate is provided for you. The resolution of the original plate material is high, you might want to down-rez it to suite your machine capabilities or find a workflow that allows you to use full resolution with out maxing out your station’s performances. Try to make your workflow light and efficient to promote fast turnaround. Plate Camera A: Preview: http://www.flickr.com/photos/3034378...tream/lightbox Full Resolution: http://www.flickr.com/photos/3034378...n/photostream/ *note: The 3D element doesn't have to be a final element. It can be used as general blocking tool i.e. cubes to guide you with perspective or general layout. Note that you are more than welcome to create final 3D assets to incorporate in your piece. The contest ends on February 5th and three winners will be picked. You have till then to complete your matte shot. Showing your wip is required in order to qualify. The winners will be picked based on how they did in regards of the guidelines described above. Every month, for each contest, three winners will be picked. The first position winner will get: 10 Gnomon DVDs The second position winner will get: 5 Gnomon DVDs The Third position winner will get: 2 Gnomon DVDs The winners are picked on the 5th of each month and the results will be announced in the thread of that particular contest. When winning a contest, the Gnomon Workshop will contact you so you can pick your DVDs and confirm your shipping address. You will have the choice of getting hard copies or digital downloads. Usually you can expect to receive the email form the Gnomon Workshop about a week after the winners have been announced. Good luck!!

Hi Guys. I had to finish this off early as Chinese New year is coming and I won't have much time in the next few weeks.
So here is my final entry. Finally decided not to add any projected logos to the sky as it was getting really too busy and those elements were destroying my original composition. It was really fun to work with this lighting, this is my first night city time matte painting and I'm quite happy how it turned out. I'm sure it can be improved , so please comment if you have some suggestions. Wishing good luck to all participants and looking forward to next month theme. Jacek

Mr. Disaster,
Your courage in asking fundamental questions about the basics is notable. In my book, they're are no silly questions. The use of 3D in the creation of your Matte Painting piece is mandatory. Don't be discourage, as doing it will make you feel great about your growth as a Digital Matte Artist. Many VFX house will expect you to be fluent in somewhat of a 3D package. Personally, I do it because of how strong the lighting tools help the realism of my shots. Ambient Occlusion calculations and Global illumination are visual cues the painters of the renaissance period we're trying to harness and now days, through the use of 3D lighting and rendering, you can come close to master them from few presets and a bit of practice. The CGChannel Matte Painting Contest is the ideal place for you to jump into the unknown and break the ice into new ways of doing and new matte painting tricks. Nothing to be afraid of as myself and your other fellow CGC members and industry colleagues participating in this forum will be there to answer your questions in the case you run into difficulties. For this contest, the minimum 3D involvement can be as simple as downloading a 3D software package, creating somewhat of a 3D form (i.e. Cube, sphere or plane) to be used as a perspective guide for your piece. No need for fancy image rendering just yet as a print screen can often be enough. Here are some links to equip you towards your goal: Painting movements and lighting styles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_painting Free downloadable 3D softwares: http://usa.autodesk.com/maya/trial/ http://www.maxoncomputer.com/download_demo.asp http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet...&siteID=123112 http://usa.autodesk.com/3ds-max/trial/ Some 3D tutorials about modeling, Lighting and Rendering: http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/sto...Maya-Tutorials The expected minimum usage of your 3D element: (Done in a downloaded Trial version of Maya)
